Background of the Study

Sports participation is a powerful medium for social development and personal growth, yet gender inequalities remain a significant barrier in many communities. In Ugep Local Government Area, traditional cultural norms and resource allocation disparities have led to unequal opportunities in sports for men and women (Etim, 2023). Recent research conducted between 2023 and 2025 indicates that female participation in sports is hindered by limited access to facilities, societal expectations, and inadequate support systems (Okoro, 2024). These inequalities not only affect athletic development but also impact broader social empowerment and health outcomes (Abasi, 2025). This study seeks to investigate the extent and causes of gender inequalities in sports participation, examining both infrastructural and cultural dimensions. By evaluating community attitudes, resource distribution, and participation rates, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for promoting equitable sports opportunities. A comprehensive understanding of these factors is crucial for developing interventions that encourage increased female participation in sports and foster a more inclusive sporting environment. The study will contribute to policy development aimed at reducing gender disparities and enhancing overall community well-being through sports.

Statement of the Problem

Despite initiatives to promote sports, significant gender inequalities persist in Ugep, limiting female participation and access to athletic opportunities (Etim, 2023). Societal expectations and resource constraints contribute to lower sports engagement among women, hindering their physical development and social empowerment (Okoro, 2024). These disparities undermine efforts to achieve gender equity in sports and community health (Abasi, 2025). This study seeks to identify the factors responsible for gender disparities in sports participation and to propose targeted strategies to address these challenges, promoting a more inclusive sports environment.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the extent of gender inequalities in sports participation in Ugep.

To identify socio-cultural and infrastructural factors contributing to these disparities.

To recommend strategies to promote equitable sports opportunities.

Research Questions:

What is the extent of gender inequality in sports participation in Ugep?

Which factors contribute most significantly to these disparities?

What measures can be implemented to enhance female participation in sports?

Research Hypotheses:

Gender significantly influences sports participation rates.

Cultural norms negatively impact female sports participation.

Improved infrastructure can increase female participation in sports.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it addresses gender inequalities in sports participation, highlighting barriers that limit female engagement. The findings will provide insights for policymakers, sports organizations, and community leaders to develop strategies that promote equal access to sports. Enhancing female participation in sports is expected to contribute to improved health, empowerment, and social inclusion in Ugep.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

Sports Participation: Involvement in athletic activities or competitive sports.

Gender Inequalities: Disparities in opportunities and outcomes based on gender.
